Palace of Versailles was a royal château built in a country village. From 1682-1789 the royal court resided here and it was considered the center of France’s political power until the French Revolution forced the royal family to return to the capital in Paris. After the arrest of Louis XVI the royal family’s possessions were auctioned off and other significant works were retained as the beginning of a planned museum collection.

The fate of the palace was uncertain and its use debated for many years, changing hands and purpose several times before becoming the tourist attraction it is now. Today the palace is a museum showplace. It’s no longer considered to be located in a country village since it became enclosed within the Paris suburbs.

The Gardens of Versailles cover 800 hectacres (nearly 2000 acres!) of land and features not only beautifully landscaped lawns, flowers, and sculptured fountains but also much of the elaborate hydraulics systems installed during the expansion of the gardens started during the Ancien Régime are still in use. Visit from April until October and the gardens may also feature a musical fountain show during your tour.
